The Journey Begins: Becoming Missionaries

Wow, what a week! The Gilberts arrived at SEND International headquarters on Father’s day, 18 June 2017. We spent some time eating with and getting to know the other missionary candidates, and we also finally got to meet the SEND staff members we had been emailing and Skyping with for several months. There was no training that day, just a meet-and-greet and some time to get settled in before a long week of training and orientation.

SEND Missionaries

Candidate Orientation Program (COP) is two weeks long and focuses on spiritual growth, partner development, personal coaching and encouragement, and communication skills. At the end of week one, we met with seven board members for a final interview. During the interview, Simcha and I had a chance to share our testimonies. The board also asked us many questions concerning philosophy of ministry, teamwork issues, and family life.

Later that evening we received the word that we had been officially accepted by SEND as missionaries. Each of the missionary families was then presented with SEND name tags, and the kids received “MK” (missionary kids) T-shirts. SEND’s mission is to mobilize God’s people and engage the unreached in order to establish reproducing churches. We are thrilled to partner with SEND in this mission, which of course, is based on the great commission.

This week was good, but it was a lot to take in. We still have another week of training ahead of us, and would very much appreciate your prayers:

  • Pray that we are able to comprehend, retain, and utilize all the training that we are receiving.
  • Pray for clarity of call for all the missionary families attending COP. Not everyone knows where they are going to yet. Even families like ours who feel called to a specific place (we want to go to Spain) may find that they are needed more in another part of the world.
  • Pray that we can figure out the timing and the logistics of our “vision trip” to Spain. This is a required trip where the whole family flies to Spain to meet the teams who work there. Teamwork is taken very seriously by SEND International, as it should be.

Thank you for your prayers. We will post another update next week.
