Advent Devotions–Dec 5: Do You Believe In GOD?

Do you believe in GOD? Do you know that he is real and that you are beholden to him? If your answer is no, or if you know someone whose answer is no, let me say this to you. All people know that there is a GOD, and they are without excuse to say that there is not. I know that seems like a very sweeping statement, and it is; it was meant to be one. It is not my statement, but GOD’s. The Bible teaches that GOD has revealed himself to all mankind through his creation. Not only that, but he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for our sins so that our knowledge of him may be complete and that we may be reconciled with GOD. That is why this time of Advent is so special, because the Holy GOD sent his perfect Son to pay the debt of sinners so that they may know and commune with him.

GOD has revealed himself to all of mankind.

In the beginning, GOD walked the earth with man, but man’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden changed the world, separating man from GOD. If you read Genesis 3 you see that Adam and Eve obtained “knowledge” by disobediently eating from the Tree of Knowledge. This knowledge, instead of making mankind wise, made mankind fools. Romans 1 teaches that GOD has revealed himself to us all through his creation.

Romans 1: 18-21 “18) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19) For what can be known to God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20) For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21) For although they knew God they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22) Claiming to be wise, they became fools,”

So man’s vain and false wisdom has suppressed the truth that GOD has written on their hearts. If you do not believe in GOD, then this is the state you are in. To make matters worse, Satan, the great deceiver, works to further blind you from the truth.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 3) And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. 4)  In their case the god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Please hear me on this: This is a precarious place to be. The righteous judgment of GOD will not be denied. Payment for sin must be made. The Bible clearly states that you can no pay this debt on your own, but it must be paid through faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. But if you are “blind” and your heart is “darkened” then what hope is there? THERE IS GREAT HOPE! Keep reading.

GOD sent Jesus to make our knowledge of GOD complete and to pay for the sins of those who will follow him in faith. The fact is, GOD wants ALL PEOPLE to accept forgiveness and to know him personally. That is why he sent Jesus Christ.

1 Timothy 2: 3-6 3) This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4) who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5) For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6) who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

John 3:16-18 16) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17) For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18) Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Man’s effort to find GOD simply isn’t good enough. He reveals himself to us, he sends light into our darkened hearts, and helps us to realize the truth of the gospel that we suppress by our unrighteousness and Satan’s lies.

Matthew 16: 15-17 15) He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16) Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17) And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

2 Corinthians 4:6 4) For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:8 8) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Please know that GOD not only wants to reconcile with you, but he has done all the work of it! We as humans have only to humble ourselves, to ask for and receive his forgiveness, and accept him as our Lord.

John 14:6 6) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Romans 10: 9-13 9) because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10) For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11) For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12) For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13) For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

I pray that if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, that you would ask him to forgive your sins and be your Lord. If you still don’t believe, consider what is at stake if you are wrong. Do you really want to be the object of wrath of GOD? Humble yourself and ask GOD to reveal within you the truth that has been suppressed by your sinful nature and the devil’s schemes. No matter who you are or what you have done, Christ can and will forgive you and restore you to GOD if you come to him in humble honesty. For the scripture says:

Romans 5:8 ESV – [8] but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
