Advent Devotions–Dec 2: Christ is the Firstborn Over All

Firstborn Over All Creation

The birth of any baby is a cause for joy and celebration. The beginning of life is a beautiful thing. Christmas is a time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus the Messiah. If you are unfamiliar with the Bible you might mistake this as a common-place event. Do not be fooled however, this was no ordinary birth. It was foretold by prophets, announced by angles, and he was born to a virgin! One thing is for sure, this baby was like no other. He was not only Mary’s first born son, but the Son of GOD, and the Firstborn over all creation.

Being the first born was a big deal in Jewish culture. The firstborn of both man and beast belonged to GOD in remembrance of Israel’s deliverance out of Egypt by GOD. (see Exodus 13:1-2,15) The firstborn son was dedicated to the Lord when he was a month old. The first born son receiveD a double share of the estate and a role of leadership within the family over his younger siblings, and became head of the household when his father died.*

This is why Jesus is often refereed to as the firstborn. He was given the highest honor and position by GOD the Father. Let’s see what scripture says about just how much authority Jesus has. Is he the “Firstborn” over everything, or is he just better than most?

Jesus is the Son of GOD

Luke 1:35
And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy-the Son of God.

Matthew 3:16-17
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

John 1:33-34
33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

Jesus is the firstborn over all creation
(Not that he was created, but that he hold the high position of that of first born; he is preeminent over all creation)

Colossians 1:15
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

John 1:3
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Colossians 1:16
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things were created through him and for him.

Jesus is the firstborn of many brothers (and sisters)

Romans 8:29
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

(These brothers he spoke of are Christians: those who have place their faith in Jesus Christ alone and Lord and savior.)

John 1:12-13
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Jesus is the firstborn over rulers, authorities, and governments.

Colossians 1:16
…whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things were created through him and for him.

Ephesians 1:21
…far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

John 19: 8-11
8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”
(Here, Christ tells Pilate that he only has “authority” over Jesus because GOD is using him to do his will. Christ i the ultimate authority, even over man’s government; even over non-believers.)

Jesus is the firstborn (head) of the church.

Colossians 1:18a
And he is the head of the body, the church.

Ephesians 5:23(If this part make you feel uneasy, check out Ephesians 5:25) For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.

Jesus is the firstborn of the dead; He is preeminent in EVERYTHING.
(Jesus was the first to died and be resurrected, never to die again, such as will happen to the saints in the end times.)

Colossians 1:18b
He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

Ephesians 1:22
And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,

Review:

Jesus is the Son of GOD
Jesus is the firstborn over all creation
Jesus is the firstborn of many brothers (and sisters)
Jesus is the firstborn over rulers, authorities, and governments.
Jesus is the firstborn (head) of the church.
