All scripture is GOD breathed...I am preparing to teach a series of lessons on Bible study techniques to the participants of my College and Career class at my church. I though that the best place to start a class of this nature would be to ask the question, “Why should we study the Bible?.” Here are some of the points I will be covering and the scriptural basis for them. They are in no particular order and I do not believe this to be a complete list, but it should be sufficient for now.

Why do we study the bible?

Because Jesus did.

–Matthew 24:3- 4 3) And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4) But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

–Luke 24: 25 -27 25) And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26) Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27) And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Scripture helps to keep you from sin

–Psalm 119: 11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

–2 Kings 22: 10-13 10) Then Shaphan the secretary told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it before the king. 11) When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes.12) And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 13) “Go, inquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”

To recognize and dispute false teaching.

–Matthew 15: 1-6 1) Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2) “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3) He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4) For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5) But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” 6) he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.

–2 Peter 2:1-3 1) But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2) And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3) And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

For use in evangelism.

–Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

–2 Timothy 3:15 .. and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

–Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.

For use in discipleship.

–2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17) that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Discerning the will of GOD

–Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

–John 6: 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me-
Leads to knowledge that can give spiritual wisdom and understanding.

–Colossians 1:9-10 9) And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10) so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

So that we can apply it to our lives.

–Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

–2 Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

–James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
